Back by popular demand, but with a twist, the IMechE is delighted to announce its next iteration of the popular Cranes seminar, the must-attend event that brings together all the engineers, safety professionals, equipment designers, industry regulators and service providers involved.

Stephen Bradby: Technical and Engineering Leader, Select Plant Hire

Steve Bradby started working with Kier Plant as a Graduate trainee in 1994 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Having worked for crane rental companies and manufacturers he has provided aftersales support for Tower, Crawler and Mobile cranes throughout northern Europe and has therefore gained a wealth of experience and knowledge. As well as leading Select industry leading innovation and engineered safety agenda Steve also site on British Standards committees for lifting as well as CPA (construction plant association) committees and even speaks at international conferences and regularly hosts the IMechE’s crane safety and sustainability conference. In recent years Steve has worked on bringing new sustainability and AI products to the market such as the Punch Flybrids and Ampd Batteries. Out of work Steve applies his engineering mind in the garage resurrecting classic cars.”

Sam Angell: Technical Consultant, GGR Group

Sam is a Technical Consultant at GGR Group. His career in lifting started out Operating, Supervising and then coming in house as an AP for GGR. Sam’s role is extremely varied and involves specification of equipment across the whole of our offering, surveying, contract lifts, lift plan production as well as managing all our lifting equipment and technical requirements into large infrastructure projects.

Teddy Holt: Operations Director, Radius Cranes

Teddy Holt is the Operations Director for UK base lifting specialist, Radius Group; who specialise in providing lifting, handling & installation solutions to various industries across the UK.
Teddy has been in the civilian lifting industry since June 2010, where he joined Radius Group after serving with the Army Air Corps as a Ground-Crewman and Landing Point Commander; operating across a range of theatres including Kenya, Iraq & Canada.
He progressed his career with Radius, operating as an Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor and Slinger/Signaller, planning, executing and offering assurance on jobs across a range of environments, including construction, engineering, de-construction, retail and rail / infrastructure, now with over a decade of experience in the lifting sector.
Teddy supports the day to day running of Radius Group, holding an expertise in providing commercially advantageous mobile, crawler and tower crane solutions along with leading the helicopter works for the business, bringing the regimented helicopter experience with him from his time serving in the British Army.

Chris Carter-Rowlands: Product Manager, NOCN

Chris joined CITB in 2011 as a Senior Account Manager for Cskills Awards at CITB. Prior to that he had a career in Project and Account Management. Since the acquisition of Cskills Awards by NOCN in 2017 Chris has worked for Deputy Head of Construction looking after the construction portfolio in all areas. Chris is currently focussing on NOCN’s Assured and Standardised short courses for the construction industry – SiteRight, as well as leading on NOCN’s Logistics portfolio. Chris is responsible for working with the Lead AP Lifting group to develop high quality courses to make lifting safer and to ensure that workers are trained to meet the needs of industry

Paul Taylor: Head of Card Services, NOCN

Since joining the NOCN Group in 2020 as the CPCS Technical Developer, Paul Taylor is currently the Head of Card Schemes at NOCN Job Cards, responsible for all aspects of the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) which includes the reviewing and development of category training and testing. As Head of Card Schemes Paul is also responsible for the delivery of CISRS cards. To ensure the CPCS scheme remains current and fit for purpose, Paul works closely with the AP Lead Group and other Industry working groups to identify areas in which the CPCS can aid to increase the safety and skills of operatives on site, achieved by recognising and introducing additional training such as the load, slinger interface and introducing new CPCS Categories such as the Multi Service Vehicle (MSV) developed in conjunction with TunnelSkills. Paul has more than 10yrs experience working with CPCS in various roles and over 8yrs with CITB in various roles, prior to which he has been a director of a training and consultancy organisation, Site Manager in Civil Engineering, Health and Safety Manager.

David Borley: AP Lifting Lead, Skanska

David Borley began his first Lifting in 1977 in the British Armed Forces, he then joined Cementation in 1986 then part of Trafalgar House Group This later became Kvaerner then Skanska where he worked on improving lifting standards. During his reviews on Cross rail in 2015 it became apparent that the Lifting Industry needed better coordination and much improved consistency in training. So David formed the Industry Lifting Lead AP Group in 2016 with a mission to improve things. This group now contains many leading contractors and industry bodies all combining to bring improvements for all areas of lifting operations.

Sean Robinson: Principal Engineer, HSB Engineering Insurance Services

From 2006 Sean served as an engineering officer with the Merchant Navy on chemical, oil and gas tankers. In 2012 Sean joined HSB Engineering Insurance Services Ltd as an Engineer Surveyor. In 2016 Sean was promoted as Principal Engineer for the Lifting and Handling Discipline offering technical support and advice to engineers and clients. In 2022 Sean completed a Bachelors degree at Teesside University with First Class Honours and achieved the IMechE award for Best Project for his dissertation. Sean is a Chartered Fellow of the IMechE and also Chairman of Technical Committee 2 for SAFed.

Clive Tunley: Principal Inspector Human Factors, ONR

Clive studied psychology (Hull) then work design and ergonomics (Birmingham) before starting work as a human factors specialist in 1995. Working for British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, consultancy, then Sellafield Ltd, he has accumulated extensive practical experience integrating human factors considerations across a wide variety of high hazard industries. In 2013, Clive joined the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) as a nuclear safety inspector, specialising in human factors. During this time, he has worked on the operating (civilian) reactors, naval propulsion and weapons sub-programmes. Recently he has started to support the new reactors division, with a focus on Hinkley Point C.

Dave Shooter: Group Crane Manager, Bowmer + Kirkland

Many of the projects Dave has been involved in have included City Centre and high rise schemes with complicated logistics and material management and distribution.
Dave has been Appointed Person for lifting operations for over 12 years and has experience of managing multi-crane and tower crane sites.
Through his appointment as Group Lifting Manager, Dave draws on his experience from site management and has a practical working knowledge of Bowmer + Kirkland management and Health & Safety procedures.
He has a down to earth approach with a proven track record of overcoming problems as they arise makes him an asset to the Station Street Office development delivery team to ensure the correct lifting solution for each project.

Matthew Pearce CMIOSH: MIFSM · H&S Manager, Skanska

A Chartered Health and Safety manager for Skanska building with 16 years’ relevant experience and many more working within the construction trade industry. Matthew has been employed by Skanska Building for the last 12 years overseeing the principal contractor role, supporting several major and complex high-rise construction projects. Aside to Matthew’s health and safety role he has a keen interest in fire safety, achieving the CHSG diploma in fire risk management and construction fire risk assessment. Matthew has been advocating the need for improved fire safety standards within the business and chairs the fire safety in construction steering group. This aims to keep abreast of legislative and relevant guidance changes and the implementation of improved fire safety and preventative standards during the construction phase.

Andrew Lack, BSc: Senior H&S Manager, Skanska

Andy has been working as a H&S professional in the construction sector with over 10 years’ experience. He is currently the H&S lead at Skanska’s 20 -22 Ropemaker St (25 storey high rise construction project) In Moorgate, London. Andy has a passion for effective fire safety management not only on a day-to-day basis but has been instrumental to revising Skanska’s existing fire management processes and procedures. He sits alongside Matthew in Skanska’s Fire Safety in Construction Steering Group and is also involved in the implementation of the Building Safety Act (BSA) chaired by Gary Neal within Skanska UK.

Mel Morrison: Co-Founder, Vita Industrial

Mel Morrison is the Co-founder of MDM Lifting Solutions. He has been a highly experienced professional and qualified AP, Lift Supervisor for over 20 years with a wealth of experience on construction projects throughout the UK, Ireland, and Europe. He has a proven track record for successfully planning and executing lifting operations in line with current best practice operational processes. He is excited to bring this new innovative technology to the market with our partners Vita.

Kevin Franks: Senior Accounts Manager, Volker Rail

Health and Safety: Reviewing lift plans, writing up Close Calls, driving step changes for the improvement of health and safety processes, and writing and implementing new work instructions and safe systems of work. Business Improvements: Part of a Business Improvement Team that looks at our business and competitors to see where improvements could be made with emphasis on creating efficiency on site. Key improvements made in lift planning, and updating planning systems and procedures. Relationship Management: Ensures a single point of contact between Specialist Services and customers. Managed the delivery and was the sole point of contact for the On Track Plant contracts with Network Rail. Site Visits and Training: Co-ordinates site visits and training to ensure the Project Team’s satisfaction with delivery terms. Manages all training and assessments required for Specialist Services operators. Risk Assessments: Writing and reviewing of risk assessments for Specialist Services. Equipment Knowledge: Full knowledge and understanding of Specialist Services Plant and equipment including rail mount cranes, crawler cranes, and piling equipment.

Richard Giles-Carlsson: Forensic Civil Engineer, Hawkins and Associates

Richard is a highly accomplished Civil Engineer, graduating with first-class honors from Imperial College London in 2012. He began his career with Laing O’Rourke, where he gained valuable experience in various construction projects, including steel frame and reinforced concrete structures, building foundations, and retaining walls. Richard also excelled as a Temporary Works Supervisor, overseeing tasks like scaffolding, excavation support systems, and propping, while ensuring strict adherence to health and safety protocols.

In 2015, he joined the Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment project, where he successfully planned and managed a range of activities such as large excavations, piling, and demolition works. He demonstrated proficiency in coordinating and supervising subcontractors and conducting safety incident reviews to determine root causes.

Since 2017, Richard has been an integral part of the Civil & Structural Engineering team, leading investigations into domestic and commercial engineering cases, ranging from small claims to complex losses. His expertise extends to international projects in Singapore and Hong Kong. Richard has tackled incidents involving structural damage, water ingress, ground movement, and catastrophic collapses. Additionally, he is well-versed in investigating personal injuries, particularly falls from height and construction site accidents, providing invaluable advice on compliance with CDM Regulations, health and safety procedures, and industry best practices.

Richard is a seasoned professional in the legal process, preparing comprehensive reports in compliance with Civil and Criminal Procedure Rules and offering expert advice to solicitors and Counsel. Kevin Fairholm: Health and Safety Director, GGR Group

Retired from the Royal Air Force after serving 26 years’ service. Spent the last few years of my RAF career specialising in Health, Safety and Environmental management and Training. Joined GGR Group in 2007. After initially setting up and managing GGR’s accredited Training and Testing centre, I moved into the role of Group Lead for Health, Safety, Quality and Environment. I currently head up a team of 6 personnel, covering both HSQE and training roles.

Nick Croudace: Commander, UK Fire and Rescue Service

Nick Croudace is the Director and Training Manager of Intervention Rescue Group Limited. Intervention Rescue provides technical rescue and safety training, as well as support services to develop onsite procedures for emergency action planning and rescue interventions. He has over 24 years operational experience as Firefighter and is a current serving Crew Commander. He has in-depth knowledge and cross industry sector experience in height safety, technical access and rescue and is widely regarded as the UK Fire Service leading Rope Rescue subject matter expert. He has been the leading contributor for much of the recent national guidance for rope rescue in the UK Fire Service. He was also a leading contributor for the Construction Plant-hire Association – Good Practice Guide - Emergency Action Planning & Rescue from Height on Tower Cranes

Elizabeth Morris: Health and Safety Manager, Volker Rail

An experienced Health and Safety Manager providing subject matter advice, assurance, direction, and support to VolkerRail Plant operations. Primary accountability for delivering on the VolkerRail Plant Health and Safety strategy, on high-risk areas of improvement and Occupational Health and Wellbeing. I take a lead role on all areas of Health and Safety by providing support to VolkerRail Plant operational teams and working collaboratively to deliver strategic Health and Safety objectives to support the business with exceptional operational performance delivered in alignment with highest standards of Occupational Safety.
