Adrian Gaylard: Technical Specialist, Computational Aerodynamics & WDM, Jaguar Land Rover

Adrian Gaylard joined British Rail’s Research Division in 1987 with a degree in Physics and Maths from Leicester Polytechnic, moving into aerodynamics in 1989 to apply CFD to rail vehicles and infrastructure. In 1996 he joined MIRA and worked on automotive, wind engineering and sports science aerodynamics projects. Adrian moved to Jaguar Land Rover in 2001 where he is the Technical Specialist for Computational Aerodynamics. Adrian has interests in drag reduction, unsteady aerodynamics, surface contamination and computational aeroacoustics. Adrian is a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Physicist, Chair of Vehicle Aerodynamics at the SAE, Chair of the EPSRC National Wind Tunnel Facility Advisory Board and a Board Member of the European Car Aerodynamics Research Association.

Akin Keskin: Chief of Virtual Engine Design System, Rolls Royce plc

Akin Keskin has studied Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Technical University of Berlin/Germany and received a PhD in Process Automation and Multi-Disciplinary Optimization from the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus/Germany. He was lecturer at Berlin and Cottbus Universities in high speed aerodynamics and application of optimization to engineering problems. Akin has started his career with Rolls-Royce in 2001. He joined the Aerothermal Methods group where he was working on parametric geometry modelling and CFD methods. He moved to Compressor Aerodynamics in 2003 and worked on many engine projects and R&T programmes across sites. He moved to Derby in 2009 to gain some experiences in Turbine Aerothermal design processes. After that he decided to re-joint the central methods team to work on automated multi-physics design systems to accelerate engineering design processes. He is currently leading a global design system programme in the company with multiple projects aiming to help the engineering community in faster solution finding and decision making by applying modern automation and optimization techniques.

Igor Strashny: Engineering Manager, Hydraulic Mining Shovels Hybrid Program, CATERPILLAR Global Mining

Igor is an accomplished engineering leader and innovator with considerable product development expertise in the mining, marine, energy and transportation, and construction industries. His work has led to significant improvements in the products manufactured by Caterpillar and other OEMs in the on- and off-highway and marine sectors. Since joining Caterpillar in 1997, Igor has lived and worked in the USA, France, Japan and the UK while managing cross-functional and international teams. He holds over 20 patents and received BSc and MSc degrees in Applied Mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Miroslav Stojkovic: Engineering Capability Manager – Design and Simulation, The National Composites Centre

Miroslav is the Engineering Capability Manager for the Design and Simulation capability at the National Composites Centre and directly responsible for Conceptual Design, Structural Analysis and Manufacturing Process Simulation teams

He has worked at the NCC for the last 4 years and is defining the strategic direction in the development of composites design, analysis and process simulation across multiple sectors including automotive, aerospace, oil and gas. Through the current work he hs been exposed to railway, and renewables sectors.

He has extensive experience in research, analysis, testing and manufacturing process simulation composite and metallic structures and materials. He has comprehensive experience in development, simulation and validation of non-linear numerical models using a range of FE codes and user subroutines in commercial codes.

Miroslav has worked on products and managed multi-functional teams from within a variety of sectors. His work includes theoretical and experimental investigations into the response of high performance polymer composite and metallic structures when subjected to a wide variety of loading conditions encompassing multi-axial, impact, creep, high strain rate and thermal events.

Omar Mian: Head of Numerical Simulation, MAHLE Engine Systems UK Ltd

After a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College in 1981 and a Masters in Tribology from Leeds University, Omar worked on solving production issues with Carpets International. A CASE award for a PhD with Vickers plc and Leeds University then followed until joining Glacier bearings in the Alperton (London) R&D centre in 1986. During the subsequent thirty year career in the automotive industry, a wide variety of roles followed including product development, test rig development, engine testing, design/deployment of production and handling equipment, training, software coding, developing the "plain bearings encyclopaedia" (internal use) and about thirty published technical papers.

Roy Kalawsky: Director of Advanced VR Research Centre, The Centre for Virtual Engineering, University of Loughborough

Professor Kalawsky is Director of the Advanced VR Research Centre at Loughborough University, UK. He has extensive industrial and academic experience, spanning over 40 years in aerospace related systems engineering. His research focusses on next generation digitalisation involving advanced modelling, simulation, synthetic environments (digital twins) and visual analytics techniques where model-based systems engineering and virtual/augmented reality are key enablers. He has published over 219 peer reviewed papers and major technical reports. All his research is collaborative, involving UK, EU and US partners and has delivered significant impacts.

Sharath Cugati: Engineering Specialist -Design, CATERPILLAR Mining

Sharath completed his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical engineering in India and worked for 11 months as a management trainee at Kirloskar Toyoda Textile Machinery Limited, Bangalore. He then moved to Gainesville, Florida, to pursue his Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering and later earned his Doctorate in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering in the field of precision agriculture at the University of Florida in 2006. Since then, he has been working at Caterpillar Inc. in various positions for the past 10 years. His experience includes model-based control systems development, machine dynamics, hydraulic systems modelling for various Caterpillar machines such as excavators, wheel loaders, motor graders and hydraulic mining shovels (HMS). He is currently in the HMS product group working as an engineering specialist and is involved in performance and controls development of new products and technologies for HMS.

Tim Morris: Chief Executive, NAFEMS

Tim Morris joined NAFEMS in 2003. He has driven the organization forward to achieve; improved international participation and increased coverage of the range of engineering simulation technologies that are embraced; and the supply of high quality guidance on the use of simulation for engineering practitioners .

Prior to joining NAFEMS Tim worked for 16 years in industry, and held a number of roles before becoming Associate Director at a leading consulting companies. During this time, he developed expertise in a variety of simulation technologies including dynamics and advanced non-linear analysis.

Tim is a Chartered Engineer and a graduate of Oxford University.

Jesper Christensen: Senior Lecturer in Stress Analysis, School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering

Jesper Christensen (PhD, MSc, BSc, CENG FIMechE) is a senior lecturer and a core member of the Future Transport and Cities Research Centre at Coventry University. Jesper's expertise is in structural optimisation with a particular emphasis on optimisation of structures exposed to large deformations. He has authored numerous papers and books on the topic as well as leading several research projects from fundamental science through to final implementation.

Philippe Martinuzzi: Research Engineer in Mechanical Modelling, EDF Energy R&D UK Centre

Philippe Martinuzzi is Modelling and Simulation Manager at the EDF Energy R&D UK Centre. He is currently managing a team of 20 research engineers in the Modelling and Simulation Centre (MaSC) based in the University of Manchester, working on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element modelling. The work is essentially aiming at supporting plant life extension of the existing nuclear AGR fleet, using a number of open source software such as EDF in-house software code_saturne and code_aster. His background is in the modelling of the AGR graphite core, with problems as diverse as crack propagation, contact mechanics and seismic behaviour.

Aleksandr Sakhnevych: Vehicle Dynamics Engineer, MegaRide

Aleksandr Sakhnevych is a Research Fellow in Vehicle Dynamics at the University of Naples Federico and CTO & co-founder at MegaRide. His PhD thesis "Multi-Physical Approach for Tyre Contact and Wear Mechanisms Modelling”, developed in collaboration with motorsport industrial partners, focused on the study and analysis of physical phenomena characteristic of dynamic contact between tyres and road, their characterization and modelling in simulation environments, with particular reference to the themes inherent vehicle dynamics, the behaviour of viscoelastic polymeric materials and the development of physical-analytical models for both real-time and multibody applications. Nowadays, Aleksandr is working on different collaboration projects with major motorsport companies, developing physical-based models as an important instrument for the identification of optimum operating conditions in order to maximize tire performances.

Nawal Prinja: Technology Director (Nuclear), Wood Group Plc

Nawal Prinja has 37 years of academic and industrial experience in the nuclear sector. He is the Technology Director of Wood plc (Nuclear) and holds a position of Honorary Professor at three British universities (Aberdeen, Brunel and Bolton). He chairs the Industrial Advisory Committee of the National Structural Integrity Research Centre at Cambridge. Currently he is working with World Nuclear Association and IAEA on Harmonisation of Nuclear Codes. He is on Fusion Advisory Board of UKRI. He was appointed as an advisor to the UK Government to help formulate their long term R&D strategy for nuclear industry and also advises the Ministry of Defence on Nuclear Propulsion Research & Technology programme.

Martin Bayliss: Senior Engineer, Stirling Dynamics

Martin Bayliss obtained a BEng Hons 1st Class (Mechanical Engineering) from Lancaster University and Masters and PhD (Numerical Modelling of Elastomers) from Cranfield University. He then worked as a Research Fellow at Cranfield University in control and systems mainly related to automotive engineering. More recently Martin has worked in the oil & gas and defence aerospace sectors with a focus on control and simulation engineering. His interests include classical and modern control system design and simulation (low and high fidelity) for verification and validation purposes.

Erik Durling: Simulation Engineer, Modelon AB Gothenburg

Erik Durling is a Simulation Engineer at Modelon AB (Gothenburg office). He currently works with service and research projects towards customers in the automotive industry. His customer work includes model deployment with FMI and real time chassis models. Erik is also doing product development work on the Modelon Electrification Library. Before joining Modelon, Erik worked for four years at Volvo Cars with Electric Propulsion Systems. Among other things, he worked with the development of test environments and the modeling and simulation of systems and components. Erik earned a Master of Science (MSc) in Systems, Control and Mechatronics from Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg).

Jonathan Wheals: Chief Engineer – Innovation, Ricardo UK

Jon Wheals is Chief Engineer for Innovation with Ricardo. He graduated from Loughborough University in Automotive Engineering, and continued for four years to identify and quantify engineering parameters which influence the perception of vehicle sportiness for Ford. At Land Rover, Jon devised HMI and functionality associated with chassis, brake, and driveline integration. Jon joined Ricardo in 1999 and developed hybrid control algorithms. He now guides a team applying system synthesis and selection methodologies supporting vehicle powertrain electrification. An advocate of TRIZ, he has lead the technical development and commercialisation of systems associated with transmission actuation, driveline and chassis dynamics, flywheel systems, military drivelines and wind turbine technologies. In 2011, Jon was appointed a visiting professor at the University of Sheffield, focused upon early machine prognostics and specialist bearings.

Michael Wheeldon: Innovation Engineer, Ricardo UK

Michael Wheeldon joined Ricardo’s graduate rotation scheme, where he experienced a variety of different roles within the business after graduating from Cambridge University three years ago. His final placement was with Ricardo’s R&D department, Ricardo Innovations (RI). After completing the rotation scheme, Michael remained in RI and became Ricardo’s first ‘Innovation Engineer’ – initially tasked with simulating hybrid drive cycles for optimal control. Today, Michael’s vehicle simulation work focuses on passenger comfort in autonomous vehicles. Outside of engineering, Michael is interested in photography and amateur theatre.

Nick Brown: CFD Engineer, BHR Group

Nick Brown is a CFD Engineer at BHR Group, a leading independent engineering consultancy that specialises in fluid engineering. He has extensive fluid modelling expertise, providing engineering solutions to the oil & gas, water & waste water, nuclear and aerospace industries. Currently involved in the ASTEROID research consortium, he has been developing more efficient ways of using simulation to determine changes in aircraft performance due to surface deviations. Nick completed a PhD at Imperial College, which explored turbulent transition using a combination of asymptotic and computational methods.

Lars-Erik Stacke: Team Leader Simulation Tool R&D, SKF Research and Technology Development

Lars-Erik Stacke has for more than 28 years been working for SKF, with development and application of the dynamic simulation software. The last ten years he has been the manager of development team of the simulation program BEAST. Stacke received his MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden in 1983, and his PhD (also from Chalmers) in 1990. Stacke has published numerous peer reviewed papers, held many presentations at different conferences and meetings, as well as authored many internal technical reports within SKF.

Matteo Villa: Senior Research Engineer - Physics Modelling, Manufacturing Technology Centre

Matteo Villa worked for 3 years as a researcher in the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development where he studied and developed new materials and components for high temperature applications, after achieving a Master degree in Mechanical engineering in Italy. He then moved to Birmingham, UK, to achieve a Doctorate in materials and metallurgy. Matteo is now Senior Research Engineer in the Manufacturing Technology Centre, UK, working in the Physics Modelling group where, through use of a range of numerical simulation techniques, supports British companies in optimizing and making more competitive their manufacturing processes.

James Weldon: Senior Engineer, Norton Straw Consultants

James Weldon is a Senior Engineer at Norton Straw Consultants, specialising in simulation and modelling across vibro-acoustics, thermofluids and structural integrity. James graduated from Durham University with a Master’s degree in Mathematics, focussing on analytic geometry. He completed a graduate scheme with Bombardier Transportation, gaining experience in whole vehicle integration, energy performance modelling, reliability, acoustics, aerodynamics and thermodynamics, and led the aerodynamics and thermodynamics team in the UK. At Norton Straw Consultants, James has worked across a range of industries, including Rail, Defence, Oil and Gas, Chemical Process and Food and Beverages. He authored the IMechE’s guidance documentation for the application of Systems Engineering in the Oil and Gas industry, highlighting the criticality of simulation and modelling within the design, development, operation and decommission of large assets.

Chris Hebert: Engineering Director , D2H

Chris Hebert is an Engineering Director for D2H, a consultancy based in Buckingham, UK, offering aerodynamic, thermodynamic, design and FEA services to motorsport, automotive and high-performance engineering companies around the globe. Prior to this Chris was Head of Aerodynamics for Toyota Motorsport and fulfilled various aero trackside and development roles for the Red Bull and Jaguar Formula 1 teams.

Mark Burnett: Project Engineer, Horiba MIRA

Mark Burnett joined HORIBA MIRA 18 years ago as a Project Engineer. Over this period, he has worked on many vehicle engineering programmes for UK and overseas OEMs. Responsibilities have ranged from short troubleshooting programmes to the delivery of entire vehicle programmes, from concept to post-production, against target. He is now Technical Leader in HORIBA MIRA’s NVH department providing consultancy support to multiple project teams.

Ray Butterworth: Lecturer, University of Central Lancashire

Ray Butterworth spent 12 years contracting as a Technical Illustrator overseas before returned to England to become Software Manager for an Electronic Communications concern. On attaining his Postgraduate Teaching Qualification he lectured for 9 years prior to becoming Higher Education Curriculum Leader for Advanced Engineering. As a Certified Instructor Ray led the Cisco Academy at Blackpool & Fylde College from 2007. In 2011 his Masters Degree research was published and formed the basis of an Honours Degree he wrote that same year. Findings from this research led to his doctoral studies. Ray currently manages an Architectural CGI studio in North Lancashire.

Brian Jarvis: Director, Eatec Dynamics

Brian Jarvis is director of Eatec Dynamics with over 40 years of experience in noise and vibration. He started his career developing dynamic analysis code, using the software for consultancy projects in the aerospace, marine, defence and oil industries. Brian has been involved with many forms of dynamic testing, often in conjunction with numerical simulations ranging from transient and shock events to vibration and modal testing. He has a keen interest in the fusion of simulation and testing. Brian is a member of the dynamics steering committee of NAFEMS and is a Fellow of the IMechE and a Member of the IOA.

Andy Green: Pilot, Bloodhound SSC

Andy had ‘the world’s best day job’ as a Fighter Pilot in the Royal Air Force.  He flew the F4 Phantom in Germany at the end of the Cold War, and the Tornado F3 on operations including the Balkans and the Middle East.  He’s currently working in the Royal Air Force Headquarters, supporting operations around the globe, and wishing he was still flying....

Andy also has ‘the world’s best holiday job’, working as part of a Land Speed Record team.  In 1997 he was the driver for the Thrust SSC team, as they set the current World Record of 763 mph, still the world’s first and only supersonic Record.  In 2006 he drove a pair of JCB digger engines in close formation, in the JCB DIESELMAX, to a diesel world record of 350 mph.

He’s now working with Project BLOODHOUND to make another great statement about world-class British engineering, and aiming to inspire the next generation of young scientists and engineers, as the team builds the world’s first 1000 mph car.

Thomas Fickenscher: Director Business Development, Modelon

Thomas Fickenscher studied mechanical engineering with specialisation for combustion engines at TU Zwickau and Queens University Belfast from 1992 – 1996. After this he worked at Siemens Automotive Telford, before moving to RoverGroup – later called MG-Rover. There he worked in the engine performance and emissions group, using simulation tools and hardware testing to optimise engine performance whilst minimising emissions. When MG-Rover collapsed in 2005 he moved to Ricardo Software. He progressed through various roles to become Global Commercial Manager responsible for all sales & marketing across all software products and territories. In 2017 he moved to Modelon AB where he is now Director for Business Development. Throughout his entire career he has either used, developed or sold modelling & simulation software.

Ben Desai: Expert, Body Structures Innovation & Technology, Body Innovations, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd

Ben Desai graduated from Imperial College London in 2012 with a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Joined Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd after graduation in 2012 as part of a 1-year internship program, which led to full time employment in 2013. Initially responsible for Adhesives & Pre-Treatments, over the years Ben’s interests and abilities have grown the role to become responsible for new materials & joining research and implementation.

Fred Walker: Lead Engineer – Manager and Programme Leader, Body CAE, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd

Fred Walker graduated from University of Dublin, Trinity College in 2008 with a First Class Honours MEng. On graduation his passion for cars led him to join Aston Martin where he has been ever since covering a variety of roles in Body Engineering and working on elements of every AM product currently in production. Fred is currently Manager in Body CAE overseeing new GT platform vehicles, responsible for developing and delivering all body engineering performance targets (crash, stiffness, NVH) through the use of simulation. Fred is also leading the CAE simulation aspect of an R&D project developing a novel composites technology.

Steve Howell: Technical Director, Abercus

Steve Howell is the Technical Director at Abercus, a consultancy specialising in advanced engineering simulation – computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), bespoke software and teaching/training – and its application in the energy sector. He has over 20 years of experience with computational fluid dynamics, both using commercially available codes for industrial applications and the design and development of bespoke CFD codes. Prior to founding Abercus, Steve led the CFD activities for Ivar Iversen at Prospect Flow Solutions in Aberdeen and for Keith Littlebury at Mobius Dynamics in Milton Keynes, both companies were early adopters of CFD in the oil and gas sector and were widely regarded as expert in this field. Steve is a graduate of Newcastle University.

Peter Clive: Senior Scientist, Wood Plc

Peter Clive has been associated with the wind power industry since taking his PhD in physics in 2002. He has had a central role in the development of the Galion Lidar, the 2nd generation wind Lidar system. This system enables wind fields to be surveyed with previously unobtainable detail and precision, revealing flow characteristics and structures that have a significant impact on the productivity and longevity of wind power assets. Peter also pioneered the introduction of response deficit analysis into wind turbine performance assessment, allowing the expertise and experience of wind analysts to be leveraged in the most focused and cost effective manner. His interests also include innovative resource assessment techniques that extract all the available information from the long and short term datasets from target and reference sites, minimizing project uncertainty and boosting project value. Peter has published widely on the subject of Lidar and has addressed many conferences around the world.

Simon Smith: Director, Transforming Stress Ltd

Simon Smith has developed and implemented methods for the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA, mainly ABAQUS) to determine the performance of engineering materials, components and structures. Qualified to the Advanced level as a NAFEMS Professional Simulation Engineer (PSE). He has been a member of the BSI WEE/37 and ISO/TC 44/WG 5 committees, and is a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) Structural Technology and Materials Group. He prepared Annex C of BS 7608: 2014 (‘Guidance on stress analysis’) and proposed the V factor (which is now used in R6, BS 7910 and API 579). He enjoys making presentations at conferences and interaction with students whilst teaching a module of the European Welding Engineer course and FEA within a Masters course in Structural Integrity. He also has a degree (first class) and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He worked as a Consultant at TWI for 28 years before moving to Transforming Stress Limited as a Finite Element Analyst.
