Jérôme Delemontez: NDT expert Engineer, EDF - Division Technique Générale

Jerome Delemontez has worked at EDF since 1992. He spent nine years in the Nuclear Power Division of EDF, where he worked for the qualification of NDE inspection procedure and equipment for the in-service inspection. Since 2005, he first worked in the DTG department as a Specialist Engineer and now as an expert in NDT techniques. His main task is to evaluate and to implement new NDE techniques for the manufacturing and the in-service inspection of components for hydroelectric and thermal power stations.

Gethin Davies: Lead Innovation Engineer, Jaguar Land Rover

Gethin Davies started his engineering career in a small composites factory in West Wales while doing his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University and then completed his EngD in composite joint/repair design and analysis with Airbus and Swansea University. After working at the In-Service department for 2 years, specifically on pre-emptive repairs on new products and reactive repairs for existing aircraft he moved to the automotive industry. He joined Jaguar Land Rover in January 2015 and worked in the Advanced Body Technology department, developing fast to market technologies to be deployed on new products. In January 2018 he joined the Global Manufacturing Innovation team and is now the manufacturing lead for the £38 million Project TUCANA.

James Downing: Chief NDT Engineer, Marine & Technology, Babcock International Group

James Downing is the Chief NDT Engineer for Babcock Marine at HMNB Devonport. He is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and holds an MSc Degree in Advanced Composite Engineering at the Imperial College of London, and BEng (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering with Composites at the University of Plymouth. James’s role at HMNB Devonport is to ensure NDT compliance for internal NDT operations as well as any sub-contractor packages undertaken on behalf of Babcock Marine. His role also extends to delivering NDT engineering innovations and initiatives to improve process efficiency, capability and personnel/product safety.

Ben Karkera: Mechanical Engineer, NDE Technology, BAE Systems, Maritime – Submarines

Ben Karkera is a Mechanical Engineer in NDE Technology at BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines, Barrow-in-Furness. He is currently involved in a project developing an advanced ultrasonic imaging technology involving TFM. He also undertakes research and technology work investigating the application of emerging technologies to Non-Destructive Testing, with a specific interest in automation. Ben graduated from the University of Surrey with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering in 2017.

Anthony Croxford: Professor of Ultrasonics, University of Bristol

Anthony Croxford is a Professor in Ultrasonics and Dynamics at the University of Bristol. Anthony joined the department as an academic in the Ultrasonics and Non-Destructive Testing group in 2007. His main research interests are in the development of non-linear ultrasonic techniques, leading to an EPSRC research fellowship, and structural health monitoring, which has resulted in novel technology for making wireless ultrasonic measurements. This technology has led to the formation of a spinout company which is currently exploring its industrial applicability. Industrial use is key and as such he is part of the team that developed a flexible ultrasonic measurement system and has taken part in multiple trials of developed techniques.

Gordon Kanyike: NDT Consultant Engineer, Wood Group Plc

Gordon Kanyike is a Mechanical Engineering consultant in Wood’s Monitoring and Inspection Design team which delivers inspection design and capability assessment projects for the benefit of clients in a range of industry sectors. Projects cover the application of conventional and advanced NDT techniques and on-line monitoring. The main techniques are ultrasonics, eddy currents, radiography and surface inspection, although all NDT and monitoring techniques are covered. The work involves laboratory experiments, theoretical modelling using commercial and bespoke software and site/client visits for implementation and auditing. The team maintains contact with experts in industry and universities and works closely with the Remote Operations and Structural Integrity teams within Wood.

Peter Wood: Head of NDE, Rolls-Royce Submarines

Peter Wood is Head of Non-Destructive Evaluation for Rolls-Royce Submarines. He is accountable for the development and justification of inspections for the Royal Navy’s nuclear propulsion plants. These are applied both during manufacture and in-service: at Rolls-Royce factories, within the supply chain, and whilst deployed at dockyard sites. Peter is a Chartered Engineer (IMechE) with a degree in Physics and MScs including Nuclear Technology & Safety Management.

Tom O’Hare: Engineering Manager, Bombardier Aerospace

Tom O’Hare is an Engineering Manager with Bombardier Aerospace, Belfast. He is the Lead Engineer for non-destructive evaluation programs and has been foremost in the industrialisation of innovative and automated diagnostic inspection platforms for complex components. He holds two Master of Science Degrees (Business Improvement (UUJ) and Non-destructive Test and Evaluation (Trinity St David)) as well as extensive expertise in material science and fracture mechanics, both in composite and metallic structures.

He participates on NDT national committees that influence special process protocols and is a keen advocate of engineering as a profession. He has lectured and presented tutorials in local Universities and Colleges and acted as a mentor/industrial supervisor for several students and projects. He is a Fellow of the British Institute of NDT and an EN 4179/ASNT certified Level 3.

Russ Booler: Principal Inspector – Nuclear Safety, Office for Nuclear Regulation

Russ Booler has worked in nuclear NDT for around 30 years with a focus on the ultrasonic inspection of complex components and materials. He began his NDT career with the CEGB and followed through the successor companies until he left British Energy to join the Inspection Validation Centre which he subsequently managed. For ten years he chaired the ENIQ (European Network for Inspection & Qualification) task group on inspection qualification. In 2015 he joined the Office for Nuclear Regulation where he is a principal inspector and technical lead on NDT.

Kalliroi Sapountzi: NDT Development Engineer, GKN Aerospace

Kalliroi Sapountzi is an NDT Development Engineer at GKN Aerospace based in Global Technology Team and currently working in the National Composites Centre. She has an academic background in Materials Science and Non Destructive Testing, with a degree from the National Technical University of Athens and postgraduate research experience at the University of Bristol. She is currently working on inspection technologies for carbon fibre rear spars of the A350 programme

Robert Smith: Director, UK Research Centre in NDE

Robert Smith is Professor of NDT and High Value Manufacturing at the University of Bristol. He studied at the University of Cambridge and Kings College, London, and gained a PhD at the University of Nottingham. His ultrasonics research career started at the National Physical Laboratory, moving through RAE Farnborough, QinetiQ and then the University of Bristol in 2013. He has authored over 120 publications, five of which were awarded medals by the British Institute of NDT of which he is an Honorary Fellow and Past President. He became the Director of the UK Research Centre for NDE (RCNDE) in 2018.

Andrew Wood: Section Lead - Methods, Rolls-Royce

Andrew Wood is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and section lead in the Rolls-Royce Submarines methods team, with a background in design. He is responsible for a group of engineers producing policies, guidance, standards, research and technical basis to support pressure retaining equipment on the Naval Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) plant. Andrew has authored updates to the Rolls-Royce Submarines structural integrity policy, NDE guidance, NDE datasheets, NDE standards and ageing management guidance. Andrew aims to contribute his experience in the recent Rolls-Royce production of a suite of internal NDE standards and also the implementation of proportionate inspection qualification in accordance with European Network for Inspection and Qualification (ENIQ) recommended practices.

Gary Whalley: NDT Production Manager, Babcock International Group

Gary has worked in NDT since 1994, and during this time has covered all aspects of N.D.T including the advanced U.T disciplines of TOFD and Phased Array. He has worked on various platforms including Submarines/Warships inspecting large and small metal structures and more recently composites. During my time in NDT, Gary has also worked on commercial projects for the rail industry and worked abroad.
