W2 CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
Conflict arises for a number of reasons. Interestingly, it can have positive effects. However, in many instances it has a negative impact and can be very destructive. What can we do about this? This workshop will explore conflict – what it is, why it arises, the knock-on effects etc. More importantly, it will look at how we can manage it and what tools and techniques there are to help us. Finally, you will get a fix on how you handle conflict. The workshop will be highly participative.
Gain insight into:
The nature of conflict
- The knock-on effects
- Emotion and logic
- People and problems
• Tools and techniques to help you manage conflict
• Conflict styles questionnaire
Iain Graydon, Business Psychologist, People: Development and Growth
Iain operated as training consultant with the GEC Management College before setting up his own training and development business. He has extensive experience of design and delivery of large development programmes, with a particular emphasis on graduate engineers. Much of his work involves face-to-face situations such as meetings, negotiations and change where conflict may arise. He has helped apprentices through to directors understand the resulting dysfunctional behaviours and what to do about them. The workshops will explore this topic further.
W3 COACHING TO SUPPORT PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT
“I would love to Coach my team, but I just don’t have the time” If this is something you have said to yourself, then come along to this interactive workshop and develop your skills as an Everyday Coach to drive results through people and achieve individual, team and organizational success. If you like to learn by doing, then this workshop is for you – there is no sitting back and watching during this session.
Amanda Henderson, Global Learning & Development Manager, Howden
Amanda is an experienced Learning and Development Manager and Executive coach with over 15 years experience in designing and delivering people development programmes across the Aerospace, Marine and Energy sectors. Amanda has firsthand experience in working with engineers and understands the challenges that can come with developing such a technically focussed group. One of her career highlights and successes was the development of an Internal Coaching & Mentoring programme that facilitated people development and knowledge transfer across a global platform. Employed with Howden since 2016, Amanda is also responsible for leading organisational change programmes and developing others to achieve their potential.
W4 LIVING LEAN
Lean is more than a technique to improve processes – Lean is not something you do but something you live. In this interactive session the focus will be on the heart of Lean – the behaviours that underpin the philosophy. Often described as central to Lean is the identification and elimination of waste and through a hands-on exercise, the participants will gain a deep understanding of what is meant by value adding and non-value-adding activities.
The practical exercise will demonstrate how Lean can work for any day-to-day activity and is really a state of mind that steers behaviours.
Stephen P. Walsh, Partner, Burge Hughes Walsh Partnership
Stephen Walsh is an experienced trainer and consultant in the field of process improvement, including Lean, Six Sigma, Continuous Improvement and Systems Thinking. The continuous improvement approaches developed by Stephen are based upon a systems perspective, where the need to understand purpose and context underpin successful implementation.
He specialises in transferring the skills of process improvement (or ‘customer satisfaction improvement’, as he prefers to call it) to client personnel by combining technical training with train-the-trainer and facilitation skills programmes. Examples of his work from both private and public sector organisations include the roll out Rapid Improvement Workshops at the Office for National Statistics; embedding Continuous Improvement in the daily activity of staff at Aberdeenshire Council; the development of Six Sigma Yellow, Green and Black Belts at Lisi-aerospace and problem-solving skills training in a variety of companies. He is currently working in large companies in aerospace, defence and power generation.
W5 BE HEARD, UNDERSTOOD AND REMEMBERED
If you want an added edge that will keep you in the mind of your listeners for days, weeks, even years after hearing you speak, join this workshop.

W6 I’M AN ENGINEER, I DO NOT NEED THE LAW OR DO I?
All engineers have to work within legal and commercial frameworks. Getting the legal side of the process wrong could cost your company large sums of money. This will be an interactive workshop covering:
General principles of the law of contract, particularly relating to formation and privity of contract and third-party rights
Essential elements of a valid contract
Contractual liability and limitation on liability
Design liability and how it may be owed to third parties
Stephen Rockhill, Engineering and Construction Lawyer
Stephen Rockhill specialises in engineering law, both contentious and non-contentious. He advises on a range of issues including practical ways to avoid disputes, advice on forms of contract and modifications to standard contract forms.
W7 WHAT’S YOUR VIEW? THINKING ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM SOLVING AND INNOVATION PREFERENCES
VIEW assesses problem-solving styles in order to understand, develop and promote strengths, identify areas of behaviour that need to be addressed, better appreciate and value the different preferences of others when innovating and solving problems. Prior to the workshop, you will complete the VIEW assessment and receive your own personal feedback report at the session.

W10 DEVELOPING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MIND-SET - APPROACHES FOR DRIVING YOUR CAREER GROWTH
Engineers are natural problem solvers, but how many engineers and engineering managers fully realise their potential to innovate and drive value for their organisations? Fortunately there are examples of entrepreneurial engineers who have achieved great things; however there are numerous examples of engineers who have got bogged down in the status quo.
In this inspiring and interactive workshop develop an awareness of approaches gleaned from entrepreneurship which you can apply to your own projects and professional development. You will leave with ideas and understanding allowing you to drive exceptional results in your current organisation (‘intrapreneurship’) as well as for your future career.

He has worked extensively in Higher Education on student enterprise, employability, and entrepreneurship and has been an expert advisor to HM Government on entrepreneurial education.
W11 DEMYSTIFYING FINANCE
The relationship in businesses between engineering and finance teams can be fraught with misunderstanding. Whilst both engineers and accountants use many of the same words they have different and often very specific meanings. As a result engineers can face multiple questions about their work and the information that they provide and can find that the financial performance of their teams is not what they thought it was. The workshop is intended to help engineers by explaining the perspectives of finance and some of the key terminology in use. It will cover through a combination of presentation and group discussion:
• How financial / management accounts work and some of the key terms that are likely to be used
• How project budgets and their management impact businesses in financial terms
• The questions Finance ask, why they ask them and what you need to consider to answer them
• Why things go off budget and how to prevent it.
W12 UNDERSTANDING ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE FROM AN ENGINEERS PERSPECTIVE
As an engineer everything you have ever worked on has been approved at some stage as a result of your company’s finance and accounting system. You don’t need to be an expert but you do need to understand what goes into this analysis to avoid the wrong decisions being made. This workshop helps give you an understanding of Financial, Management and Cost accounting and their impact on your business.
