Ron Bell: Director, Engineering Safety Consultants

From 1992 until 2006, Ron Bell was Head of the Electrical and Control Systems Group in HSE. In 1998 he was appointed a member of the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority which is a post he held for 13 years. He chairs one of the two IEC working groups responsible for IEC 61508 (the international standard for functional safety) and in that capacity was responsible for both the first and second editions.  In 2005 he received the IEC 1906 Award for his work on functional safety. He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at Liverpool John Moores University.  He is a Director Engineering Safety Consultants Limited.

Sauro Riccetti: Professor of Automatic Machines for Food Industry, University of Bologna

Sauro Riccetti, PhD, carried out his research studies on maintenance and process engineering applied to the food industry, receiving his doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree in manufacturing engineering at Brunel University in London. He is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK), member of the IMechE Food&Drink engineering committee, and a chartered engineer of the Engineering Council (UK).

Dr. Riccetti has worked in the food industry for more than 30 years and is actively involved in developing new products and services to improve food safety and equipment reliability in the food industry’s packaging lines. His experience at Tetra Pak Italy and in holding several different positions therein, including customer service director, and business development director, as well as his involvement in improvement projects for the food industry, have enabled him to gain wide experience on maintenance and process engineering applied to the food industry.

Dr. Riccetti lives in Modena, Italy.

Alan Jackson: Director, Alan Jackson Engineering Services Ltd

Alan Jackson is the director of Alan Jackson Engineering Services Ltd, a, which provides clients with advisory services from conceptual design through to commissioning in the field of bulk handling

A member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Process Industries Board and Chair of the Bulk Materials Handling Committee also the Chairman of the British Standards committee MHE/9 and a Past President of the MHEA.

He has worked globally on materials handling installations for various industries.

Allied to his technical and engineering knowledge also has vast global sales, contract and commercial experience in the bulk handling industry

Dave Price: Principal Engineer, Managing Director / UK President, Gexcon

Dave is a recognised leading explosion specialist and extensively provides his services to the power; petrochemical; pharmaceutical; automotive and food industries. He has been involved with industrial explosions for in excess of 25 years, mainly serving the bulk material handling, oil and gas, petrochemical and high hazard industries providing safety and risk management with respect to process safety and more so explosive atmospheres, providing consultancy to predict, protect and mitigate dust, gas and vapour cloud explosions. He also acts as an expert witness and accident investigator in relation to explosion incidents and delivers advanced explosion science courses on behalf of the IChemE.

Declan Barry: Director, ATEX Explosion Hazards Limited

Declan started as a Mechanical Engineer in Ireland in 1978, after further education with the Institute of Industrial Management and Product Development 1984 to 87.  Declan started his Explosion Protection career with Mercury Engineering in 1987 finishing as the General Manager in 1997. He developed, tested and installed Pressure Hot Water Explosion Suppression Systems for the Dairy industry. Declan Bought Explosion Hazards in 1998. Declan is a Member of the Institute of Engineers in Ireland, the European Safety Management Group, he was the Irish representative on EU’s Safetynet programme, a member of the National Standards Association of Ireland representative to CEN TC305 and the UK’s BSI EXL/23 standards.

Declan is a member of the MHEA & an official speaker at many of their Materials handling seminars. He is also on the council of the trade association SHAPA.

Martin Bardle: Head of Compliance, ABP Humber Ports

Martin Bardle is Head of Compliance for the ABP Humber Ports, (Immingham, Hull, Grimsby and Goole), where he manages a portfolio that includes Health, Safety, Security, Quality and Environment. Martin has worked in various sectors including; construction and consultancy at Mace, manufacturing at Rolls-Royce, highways with EnterpriseMouchel and rail with Balfour Beatty Rail Projects. Martin holds a Masters Degree in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Management, is a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

Mike Bradley: Director, The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology

Mike Bradley is Professor in Particle and Bulk Technology and Director of the Wolfson Centre. He was awarded both his honours degree and PHD from Thames Polytechnic (now the University of Greenwich) and, as manager/director, provides technical leadership in all aspects of bulk solids handling. His particular areas of interest lie in pneumatic conveying, design of hoppers and silos, dust control, plant integration and maintenance of product quality. He is Chair of Solids Handling and Processing Association (SHAPA), and a member of Materials Handling Engineers Association (MHEA) and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Bulk Materials Handling Committee (IMechE).  He was awarded a professorship in 2006 and the directorship in 2008.

Nigel Allen: Technical Manager - Major Hazards, DEKRA Insight

Nigel Allen is a chemical engineer by background, graduating from Aston University in 1985.  He worked in industry for 17 years, the majority of these in process safety.  Nigel’s last job in industry was as an environmental, health and safety manager at a COMAH-regulated site in North-East England.

Since 2004 Nigel has worked for Chilworth Technology (now DEKRA Insight); first as a senior process safety specialist and since 2014 as a technical manager.   While at Chilworth/DEKRA Nigel has worked on numerous fire and explosion assessments; as well as COMAH safety reports, quantified risk assessments and process safety management audits.    

Nigel lives in Leeds and is married with one child.

Paul Stevens: E&B Senior Advisor, Manufacturing and Local Authority Unit, Environment Agency

Paul has been involved with Industrial Environmental regulation for over 25 years, starting as an engineer within the cement industry and then becoming an inspector for the Environment Agency.

Currently Paul is a Senior Advisor in the Environment Agency specialising in the cement, lime and minerals sector.  Paul has represented the UK at the Technical Working Group in Seville reviewing the BREF for the cement and lime industries. Paul originally qualified as a chemical engineer and went on to gain a M.Sc. in Bulk Solids Handling.
